the style is shito ryu and the dojo focusses on kihon and kata training predominately. in the morning, i would do basic techniques – starting with isolation drills for each technique and work my way up to marching around the room. every week i picked a day to bail on training and rest randomly. i have instead taken up running on a treadmill and weight lifting with occasional mountain biking. never take up running on hard pavement as your primary exercise (this is what finally did in my knees – though the wear and tear was well deserved and building up for a long time) on point 2. are you talking about tabi? 1-2 in the dojo sparring or partner drills 3 days endurance training 2 days strength training 1-2 days solo drilling/heavy bag i go to the dojo 2-3 times a week (school allows for as many visits in the week as you like), on the weeks less than 3 i like to do stuff at home to either remember the correct forms in kata or work on my flexibility and hip muscles because i’m an older guy. i probably do an amount of physical conditioning and solo karate work that averages out to 5-7 hours a week.
been looking at kata a fair bit and working on footwork for kumite. don’t spend an hour in neglect 🙂 my dojo practices 3 hours a week and focuses almost exclusively on kihon and kata. now that i have my own place and don’t have a dojo to go to, i find myself practicing every day for between half-hour and an hour. i spend that time mostly doing basic exercises and kata. if you are more competition oriented then you may want to clock more hours at home. i think specifically, i’m trying to improve my kata as a lot of them are new to me having studied goju prior to shito ryu. i try to do 4-5 days a week of meaningful exercise. i need to get more pad time and sparring time, and do more jumprope, thinking of joining a kickboxing gym.
