so one thing i see with a lot of olympic weightlifting programming is a lack of defined progression… maybe it’s just because i’m coming from a powerlifting background where you just add 5# or so a week or whatever the case may be, but with a program like this, how do you choose how many sets and when to add weight for the classic lifts? instead of chasing prs or being on a schedule for how much weight to lift, i just focus on being consistent – consistent with my technique and consistently making lifts. i think the answer is that it’s too complicated to put in a simple program. i think it’s kind of expected that, at the end of however many weeks you choose to do for a “cycle,” you would test your snatch and cj and possibly some of the other lifts.
i get a detailed plan with exercises, sets and reps to do for each training day from my trainer. i think that a good way of training variations is more in line with the concept of a training/daily max – work up to a weight in a given exercise that is challenging but doesn’t compromise form. i see some wisdom to the idea that pulls and squats should be done on alternate days so that they do not interfere with one another, but haven’t really seen a lot of discussion on it. this is more or less my program right now but with an added fourth day where i work up to a heavy single, then drop to triples in both lifts.
