i run/walk for 30 to 45 minutes three to four times a week. while i found these challenging, i still felt good at the end and had minimal soreness the next day. if you can do a 6 hour hike and feel pretty good at the end with minimal soreness the next day, i suspect if you keep training and keep active you’ll be fine. you’ll be dead tired at the end, but it’ll be a good tired and you’ll have great fun. the ascent through to 4200m from about 3000m is a killer for those not prepared. by the time i left i had reached 7 times up and down 3 times a week in addition to the walk. also remember that, due to the altitude, you may need to hike at a slower pace. i am impressed that you were able to do so many steps.
i did some stair work prior to hiking the it, but not nearly enough. totally agree that the most important aspect of preparing for the inca trail is to give yourself plenty of time to acclimatize to altitude. btw, i am overweight & older than many if not most of the inca trail trekkers. i work in a 12 story building and take the stairs everywhere. so a benefit to my new found elevator fear is that i can in some extra training! i was a naysayer previously thinking it wouldn’t help that much. going to try to add some stairs here and there and more hilly day hikes. i already have a prescription for the diamox and we’ll be in cuzco three days before the hike. this is the version of our website addressed to speakers of english in the united states.
