it’s been nearly three months since students joined us back on south hill for the spring semester, and it has been great to see so many familiar, albeit mask-covered, faces on campus. the campus community’s diligence in sticking to their designated testing schedule has also been a big factor, helping us learn of any new positive cases quickly so that we can begin the isolation and quarantine process without delay.
here are some reminders to follow when submitting your sample to help ensure it is processed in a timely manner: in following all these steps, samples can be processed more quickly, and you will receive your results in a timely manner, helping ensure that we keep our campus and each other safe during this trying, but hopeful time. if you have any questions regarding the testing process or your test results, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at testing@ithaca.edu or (607) 274-5846.
now you’re left with the somewhat daunting task of providing a sample. please do not have anything by mouth for 30 minutes (or more) prior to collecting your saliva sample. we want to make sure it is only your sample and we have lots of your dna to test. take a sharpie or other pen (preferably non-washable and dark so it’s easy to read) and put your full name and birth date on the tube. others have a simple barcode on the tube and it’s up to you to decide where to put your name. also, please be sure to add the date of your sample. now that you’ve done all the prep work, it’s time to provide the saliva.
it takes most adults a few minutes to make or produce enough saliva to get the sample over the top line. it’s up to you-there’s no right or wrong way to do this part–but most find it easier to hold a moment and get a larger amount of saliva ready before spitting. once you’ve reached the magic level of spit, aka your liquid saliva is over the magic line, close the lid until you hear a click or pop. now shake or invert the tube a number of times to mix the saliva and liquid. confirm that your name and birth date are on the tube. call the mail carrier to pick up the kit, or drop off at the nearest fedex drop box or office or usps. there is no right way to get saliva into the tube. genetic support foundation is here to help you sort through the ever-evolving world of genetics.
