the american academy of dermatology recommends everyone use sunscreen with uva and uvb protection (commonly labeled as broad-spectrum protection), a sun protection factor (spf) of 30 or higher and is water resistant. they further note that most people only apply 25 to 50 percent of the recommended sunscreen, so don’t forget to apply generously 15 minutes before sun exposure. this is even more important if you will be spending a lot of time outside in the heat.
